sustainability
The most sustainable garment is what already exists.
Through upcycling, Jawoll Baby makes damaged clothing made from the valuable natural material wool usable again.
Zero Waste is the goal
In Germany alone, over a million tons of textiles are disposed of in used clothing bins every year. Jawoll Baby wants to help give damaged clothing a second chance. Upcycling turns broken wool sweaters into baby clothes.
Stay in the cycle - upcycling textiles
This incredible amount of old clothing is donated to the Berlin City Mission, among others. Many items of clothing are already damaged, meaning they cannot be given to those in need or local shops. These textiles are sorted out, collected in the local material pool and made available for upcycling. I get most of the wool sweaters from which the Jawoll pieces are made from the material pool. I buy the material by the kilo, which allows the City Mission to refinance itself.
I am grateful to have found more partners over time.
Local & climate neutral
Material procurement, design and production take place in Berlin.
Shipping within Europe is plastic-free and climate-neutral.
The orange thread
Wool is biodegradable – polyester yarn is not.
When the textile's life cycle is over, you can see at a glance through the orange seams where you can separate the thread and wool and thus enable recycling. Only separated materials can be recycled in household waste.
Avoid animal suffering
Wool is a wonderful natural material: it regulates temperature, is breathable, dirt-repellent and odor-resistant. These are all properties that make wool an ideal material for baby and children's clothing.
However, breeding sheep for wool production is harmful to the climate and causes animal suffering. Mulesing and painful shearing are the norm in wool production. A sustainable alternative is to use existing resources: Jawoll Baby gives damaged wool sweaters a new life and makes the valuable resource wool usable again.
